5 Milestones of Knowledge Transfer

If you are a teacher or a student, ensure you pass these 5 and be patient. It takes 20 years to become an overnight success.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A REMARKABLE OR UNUSUALLY TALENTED PERSON TO MENTOR OTHERS…IT DOES TAKE DESIRE AND A COMMITMENT TO THE PROCESS, BUT IT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF SUCCESS. – JOHN C. MAXWELL

Time to Cover the Subject

It would be best if you become literate in the subject you are going to learn. In this phase, you are reading and learning as much as you can on the subject. You will also be noting all the steps and the order of sequence of steps that lead to a successful outcome.

Partial Implementation

As you get started, you will be trying to master a part of the process. As you attempt it, you should get immediate feedback or direct supervision to get real-time feedback.

First Full Implementation

As your skills grow, you will take on more of the process until you can do the full process. It is best to be supervised or shadowed by a master of the process in real-time, and if not, you can request feedback from such a master soon. This is critical to ensure you are producing quality work before step4.

Iterate Full Unsupervised Implementation

Perfect repetition is the mother of boredom and the father of skill. You can do all steps as you begin to polish your style and ability to produce better quality over time.

Become the Teacher

Become the Teacher. Now you are ready to teach others. 3 situations signal it is time to teach:

  1. Your audience is new to the topic and does not know the current knowledge.
  2. As you practice, new knowledge replaces previous knowledge, e.g., the world is spherical replaces the world’s knowledge of it being flat.
  3. There is a new growth area, and education is needed for new tools or processes.

I would think machine learning should follow the same pattern to really build great models.
